INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CONDUCTED BY IBA

Indian Expanding Horizons of Indian Business and Indian Management on 14th & 15th Jan 2008 at IBA-Bangalore

Conference Coordinator, Prof. Pratima Verma

Success of Indian Business and development of world class Indian Companies have some new lessons for the management world both within India as well as for the rest of the world. While ‘Indian Business Acumen’ has been known since ages, it is finding a new recognition in a new context. Further, during recent years the idea of “Indian Management” has been emerging as a result of success of Indian corporate and Indian Organizations in varying fields. A new conceptualization of Indian experiences of developing world class organizations and institutions has been taking place in the practitioners’ world as well as in the academic world. A new world stage for Indian Management has emerged wherein Indian concepts and mantras of management have been finding global acceptance & visibility and echoes in the corporate corridors.

The current conference, ‘Expanding Horizons of Indian Business and Indian Management’ is in continuation of earlier initiatives to share the essence of the Indian experience of creation and development of innovative organizations and world class corporate. In 1998, a conference on the theme, ‘In Pursuit of Indian Management’ was organized at Bangalore, by a group of nearly twenty leading institutions and professional associations. This was followed by a conference in 1999 on the theme, ‘Indian Management for Nation Building’ organized by WISDOM, Banasthali. In 2006, third conference on the theme, ‘New Frontiers in Indian Management: From
Management in India to Globalization of Indian Management’ was organized by WISDOM, Banasthali and Indian Business Academy (IBA) at WISDOM, Banasthali. The current conference is a continuation of these efforts as many new horizons and frontiers have opened in the arena of Indian Business and Indian Management. This is best captured by the phrase, From Dabbawalas to Indian Milk Producers to Indian Retailers to Indian Knowledge Workers to Indian Knowledge Entrepreneurs.

The Fourth Conference was on Indian Expanding Horizons of Indian Business and Indian Management on 14th & 15th Jan 2008.

A two day international conference on expanding horizon of Indian business and Indian management, was organized by Indian Business Academy, (IBA) & WISDOM Banasthali at IBA campus Bangalore. It was graced by twenty two eminent speakers, forty seven paper presenters and nearly fifty other participants from academia and corporate world.

The program started by lighting of lamp by Prof S. K. Chakraborty, Key note speaker and other dignitaries. Thereafter IBA Chairman, Mr B. M. L. Jain and the conference chairpersons, Dr Subhash Sharma, Dean, IBA, Dr. Siddharth Shastri, Dean, WISDOM and Dr K. B. Akhilesh, IISc, Bangalore addressed the gathering followed
by Keynote address by Prof S. K. Chakraborty.

In his opening remarks Mr. B.M.L Jain, Chairman, IBA highlighted the need for Indian Management to improve the competitiveness of Indian companies by giving examples of TATA, Wipro and also the changes in Indian infrastructure and economy as a whole . He discussed some of the current management issues ---Turning around of sick companies, Timely structuring of business & futuristic vision, Competition Quality & costing, Impact of strong rupee on National economy. He indicated that India has all the resources to become global leader not only in corporate arena but also in giving a strategic direction to world trade. He highlighted that B schools should stress on developing leaders rather than only managers.

Dr Subhash Sharma, Dean IBA and conference Chairperson redefined the idea of Chindia as Chi of India that is energy of India that we are witnessing in various fields leading to economic growth of 8-9%. He connected the emergence of Indian management to six ‘streams of consciousness’ viz. Indian ethos foundations as reflected through 3 Vs viz. Valmiki, Vyasa and Vivekananda, Freedom movement foundations, Indian Business foundations, Cultural foundations, Subaltern/Social movements foundations and Capillary action foundations. He also advocated the need of shifting the paradigm from Darwin to Dharma, Maslow to Moksha and Marx to Mahatma as a basis for new management thought. He concluded that today in India there are ‘char-dhams’ (four pilgrimage centres) of Indian Management represented by Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV) at IIM Calcutta in East, WISDOM in West and IBA Greater Noida in North and IBA Bangalore in South as these institutions have emerged as centers for research in Indian Management.

Dr.Siddharth Shastri, Dean, WISDOM, advocated the need of focusing on Indian Management rather than on Western management alone. He shared his journey of, “making of WISDOM-Banasthali” and how it is working in line with Indian management. He also discussed how WISDOM students are making mark in the corporate world.

Dr. K.B.Akhilesh, Department of Management Studies, IISc shared how he and other Professors started their journey of enlightening the academia and corporate world about the positives of Indian Management particularly from the view point of self development.

This was followed by book release of the book, “Consciousness, Time and Praxis” authored by Prof. Meera Chakraborty, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Bangalore University. Book was released by
Prof S. K. Chakraborty, Founder, Management Centre for Human Values, IIM –C.

Prof. S.K Chakraborty, in his keynote address pointed out that it is not enough to empower the managers but it is important to empower the roots through self realization. He suggested the need for re-empowering the workers and the managers and this empowerment can be facilitated through reconnecting with India’s spiritual roots. He
gave examples of inspired foreigners who work for India by connecting to Indian heritage. He advocated that Indian management because of its spiritual roots is much deeper and stronger than any other management. He also discussed the drawbacks of contemporary philosophy of globalization, consumerism and materialism and
discussed how Indian management’s philosophy helps us to think beyond this narrow view of life, and business organizations.

There was a special talk by Dr. H R Nagendra, Director, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Ansandhana Samasthana (SVYAS), Bangalore on yoga, health and management. She argued that the metaphor of ‘Western Windows Eastern Doors’ provides a new framework of thinking not only for management thought but also for social thought.

Dr. Mala Kapadia in her paper, ‘Greater Psychology & Era of Emotional Intelligence’, gave the importance of emotional intelligence as well as demonstrated some simple exercises to relax. She indicated that health and well-being sciences are now being integrated in management sciences as stress is taking its toll on productivity, creativity and even life quality.

Prof. Usha Thakkar summed up the session through illustration of three well known women leaders of the country who provided three distinct insights related to indigenous concepts on management and leadership. She quoted the example of Ratan Sastry, co-founder of Banasthali Vidhyapith who always emphasized the importance of new mathematics in social contexts in terms of 1 + 1 = 11 (Ek aur ek gyaraha) as a basis for creating innovative institutions. She quoted Usha Mehta well known freedom fighter and educationist, who advocated, “Go together, Grow together” ( Agye badana sath mein badana). She also quoted Ela Bhatt, founder of SEWA, “We are poor and we are so many” as a lesson of collectivism.

States of
consciousness 2. Yoga therapy with reference to a striking parallel surviving within the framework of Late Antique and Renaissance philosophical traditions in the forms of dream divination and astrology.

Ms Sunita Chandak informed about the importance of spiritual quotient and did some interesting exercises to demonstrate how we get carried perceptions.

Prof. G.P. Rao emphasized the need to highlight the importance of interplay between head and heart in management thinking and action and he also shared his experience of introducing human values in day to day managerial working and also in the curriculum of B-schools with which he has been associated.

This model is based on simple but effective thought,“Healthy people will create and constitute healthy environment and healthy organization”. Prof. Venkat Krishnan suggested that we need to undertake empirical testing of the ideas drawn from ancient sources as the ideas were developed in a different space time context. Hence for establishing their relevance we need their testing in contemporary context.

Second Day of the conference:

Second day of the conference started with talk by Dabbawalla on the theme, “Developing Innovative Grassroots Organizations”. Mr Pawan Agrawal, CEO, Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers or simply Dabbawallas, & his team shared their success story. They emphasized on the need to maintain integrity. They exhorted to the youth in

Prof. John Clammer stressed the need to move beyond “Corporate Responsibility” towards a deeper notion of business as development, business that is focusing on development of entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation.

He argued for anew alliance through creativity and holism between development studies and business with a view to create a new future for communities.

Prof Maitreyi emphasized the need for organizations based on collective action paradigm and illustrated emergence of such organizations in two categories viz. in response to threats in the environment and in response to opportunities provided by the environment. She illustrated the idea of collective action through examples of many business organizations as well as NGOs.

After lunch forty seven papers were presented in parallel sessions on the following themes:
Theme I: Indian Management
Theme II: Business Ethics
Theme III: Rural Management & Development
Theme IV: HR
Theme V: Contemporary Interest,
Theme VI: Yoga, Meditation & Spirituality
Theme VI: Micro-Finance

Valedictory address was given by Dr. N.C.B.Nath, Chairman, FAIR. He provided new perspectives with respect to developments in sciences and suggested the need to incorporate the implications of such developments in management thinking in addition to drawing from the deeper roots of Indian philosophy. He indicated that this is
a new challenge for management thinkers as management teaching in the past has been an integrated exercise drawing from disciplines of economics, psychology and related social sciences. However it has to move further and incorporate new developments in sciences and should also draw upon the Eastern philosophical traditions that are becoming increasingly relevant for the future development of management discipline. Prof Pratima Verma, conference coordinator gave the vote of thanks for the successful conference.

In the one an half hour session Dr. Mercer presented a slide show on the importance of public education in context of both India and abroad. He suggested many ideas which can lead to successful implementation of public policies, as it is important for holistic development of any nation. According to him illiteracy among youth is a hurdle to the success of any nation. He discussed how the policies were failing in India and abroad. He also shared his experience as a board member of directors of Victoria Hospital and of the London Health Sciences Center and as a member of the board of directors of the Western Ontario Conservatory of music. He also shared his plethora of experiences with our students. Other dignitaries who attended the talk were as follows : Prof. Trent Schroyer, Professor of Sociology-Philosophy ,Ramapo College, New Jersey, The USA, Prof. Susan Hangen Professor of Anthropology, Ramapo College, New Jersey, The USA , Prof. Ruma Sen Professor of Media Studies, Ramapo College, New Jersey, The USA, Prof. John Clammer Professor of Sociology, Tokyo’s Sophia University, Japan , Prof. Siddhartha Chief Executive, Fireflies Inter-Cultural Centre, Bangalore. Writer, Sociologist and founder of the NGO, Pipal Tree Interactive Session with Dr. Vinayshil Gautam Dr. Vinayshil Gautam conducted a half-day workshop on, “Emerging Trends in Management Education” for the faculty of IBA, Bangalore on 12th March, 2008. Dr. Gautam was the first Head of the Management Department of the Indian Institute Of Technology, Delhi and the first Coordinator of the Entrepreneurship Programme at IIT (D). Dr. Gautam was the first Chair Professor of Comparative Management at IIT (D). He discussed the problems of present education system and how even the top universities in India are lacking behind the top colleges of world. He stressed that faculty should be involved in research work so that there is growth in knowledge. He gave few models which are helpful in overall development of academic world which includes the growth of institution as well as growth of faculty. He even criticized the present management institutions as they are more of placement agencies. He emphasized that management institutions should move from model of placement agencies to knowledge creator.

Interactive Session with Prof. John Clammer

Prof John Clammer—United Nation University, Tokyo conducted a workshop on, “Holistic Development” on 15th March 2008. He urged for model that has major implications for development education and its interfaces with business education as it suggests that development issues be placed squarely on the business agenda, that business itself orients itself towards an emerging future of resource scarcity and that we need to move beyond notions of simple "corporate responsibility" to a much more comprehensive vision of business as one of the major stakeholders, along with government and civil society, in our common future.

The result has been to draw attention to a much more holistic or integral model of development that includes elements left out of development discourse in the past. These elements include, in addition to the economic and technological, the ethical, the aesthetic, the spiritual, the cultural, political, ecological and the psychological and emotional dimensions. The lecture suggested a model whereby these elements might be integrated into a holistic model that is also sensitive to the dynamism of social change processes and of the multiple feedback loops between the various elements of the model. It was suggested that this new approach has major implications for our methodology for attempting to understand social transformation in which we accept our relative ignorance about the effects of our interventions, that we understand social theory as being closer to chaos theory than to older functionalist or structuralist models, and in which social knowledge is seen as libratory as in Amartya Sen's notion of "development as freedom", as participatory and exploratory.

FROM EDITOR'S DESK

To be associated with a landmark event, you not only need to be imbued with ample support from all those make it happen but also rub of the green. It is with overwhelming pride and deep sense of gratitude that I present before you – UDGHOSH – our new biannual newsletter. With utmost humility let me accept that coming up to the expectations was not easy. It was only the unrelenting support of everyone associated with this newsletter that ensured that the effort was insistent and we achieved what we set out to achieve.

Patronage of Dr. Subhash Sharma, our Dean – who envisioned the idea of an in house newsletter, has contrived, against many challenges, this first issue. It is arduous to mention all the minds behind this but it will be outright shamelessness if I refrain from mentioning the names of persons who have exhibited extraordinary and zeal and enthusiasm in realizing this. Prominent among them are – Mr. B.M.L. Jain, our beloved chairman and ever supporting CEO- Mr. Manish Jain. I also want to convey my thanks to the newsletter committee, who extended their unconditional support to my dream.

UDGHOSH will attempt to mirror our campus and the life that runs in it. We have just created a legacy that will pass on from batch to batch and from mentor to mentor in IBA. This newsletter will, hopefully, provide podium for our students to speak out, canvas to paint their thoughts, tools to create, medium to share and imprint some shades of their lives onto it.

While some serious hard work and thinking has gone into this, I am sure that there is considerable scope for improvement and we all need to contribute our bit to make this newsletter world class – a befitting compliment to our institute.

I look forward to feedback and hope that this newsletter, in more ways than one, touches all of us and years later when we flip through these pages, we relive the wonderful times that we were
privileged to have.

Thanks.
Prof. Pratima Verma
